Botanicas for me are a vestige of the old Union City, NJ, when it was still Havana on the Hudson. Here, in contrast stands a man modeled after a Central American day laborer. He represent the new wave of immigration. After the Cubans and South Americans, came the Mexicans and Central Americans. Now the botanicas have started to adapt, and next to Changó you’ll find the Santa Muerte.

Represent the jewel of New Jersey with this Bergenline t-shirt. Extending from Union City through West New York, Guttenberg, and North Bergen, Bergenline Avenue is a main street like no other! Even the Avenue des Champs-Élysées pales in comparison. Central to this design is the dollar van (jitney) which is as much a staple of BLine (as it’s known in the local vernacular) as the cuban sandwich.
This piece was made to be a little more commercial than most of my Union City watercolor series of illustrations. In fact this is almost not Union City. It’s on the border with Weehawken, our more affluent neighboring town, famous for its old water tower, and Hamilton’s last duel.
