Having drawn Bergenline Jitney buses from the outside, this piece shows the people inside it. Based on “Third-Class Carriage (San Francisco)” by Honoré Daumier.
La Patasola is a legend of Colombian folklore. A one legged creature which lures men into the woods disguised or transformed as an attractive women. In wanting to keep most of my art local to my community in Northern Hudson County, I placed this figure in James J Braddock Park in North Bergen, NJ. I also couldn’t help but lean into Weird NJ with the famous UFO magnet, the Stonehenge building in the background.
Not really a maid but a Union City, NJ restaurant worker. The name is taken by the piece that this was inspired/copied from, Johannes Vermeer’s The Milkmaid. When I first started this watercolor series of Union City illustrations I based the first one on a Caravaggio, so after a few original pieces I went back to the masters for this one.

Botanicas for me are a vestige of the old Union City, NJ, when it was still Havana on the Hudson. Here, in contrast stands a man modeled after a Central American day laborer. He represent the new wave of immigration. After the Cubans and South Americans, came the Mexicans and Central Americans. Now the botanicas have started to adapt, and next to Changó you’ll find the Santa Muerte.

I’ve always found that section, west of Kennedy Blvd, in North Bergen NJ interesting. Looking around Google Street View, I came across this interesting street at 61st, Newkirk Ave, and Durham Ave. I went there, took some reference pictures and painted this.

This piece was made to be a little more commercial than most of my Union City watercolor series of illustrations. In fact this is almost not Union City. It’s on the border with Weehawken, our more affluent neighboring town, famous for its old water tower, and Hamilton’s last duel.

Sometimes when you gotta go you gotta go. This scene is inspired by a real life experience, unfortunately (not me, someone I saw), and the color scheme and sky from a japanese ukiyo-e print.
